Last week, I delivered diapers and wipes donated by MPOMC members to Almita, who lives with her husband, 10 mos old twin boys (Gabriel and Angel), 3.5 year old daughter (Vivienne), and 8-year old son (Osvin) in the tiny living room of their one-bedroom apartment.
The living room, dominated by two queen size beds, is where all six members of the family sleep, eat, and live. We all know how tough that first year is with twins, but it has been especially challenging on this family given Almita can no longer work since the arrival of the twins, and her husband’s work in construction dried up with the slow economy. As a result, Almita said that they recently had to sublet the only bedroom in their apartment to help pay rent and buy food.
Each of the eleven families in our Community Outreach program is faced with challenges trying to raise multiples here in Marin. Almita and her situation particularly resonated with me since I also have four young kids, and our twins are almost the same age. It definitely put a lot of things in perspective for me of how fortunate so many of us are to have the basic necessities such as diapers, wipes, and warm clothing for our kids. Right now, Almita is making difficult choices between buying diapers or food.
During this holiday time, we all feel stretched thin in the process of finding the perfect gifts for our kids. Within MPOMC Community Outreach, we are committed to supporting our eleven families with some holiday gifts for their kids (which will include diapers, wipes, clothing, books, toys, etc..).
This year, we want to make it easy for MPOMC members to be matched with one of the eleven Community Outreach families. If you would like to help contribute gifts to children in the MPOMC Holiday Family Match Program, please contact Heather McPhail Sridharan (mcphail.sridharan@gmail.com) or Jana Mannina (askjana@gmail.com) by Dec 10th. We will provide a brief description of the names/ages/gift ideas for the kids in one of our eleven families so you can easily add them to your holiday shopping lists. All gifts are warmly appreciated.
A Window on Five Families in the MPOMC Community Outreach Program
As MPOMC members, we should feel proud of what our club is currently doing to help support the 11 families in our Community Outreach program. Your recent donations of diapers / wipes / clothing from our Halloween event provided each of our families with a recent shipment of diapers / wipes and warm clothing. Also, a special acknowledgment goes to MPOMC member Sarah Marovich who delivered a dinner to the family of Maria, who recently spent a week in the hospital with complications in her pancreas resulting from gestational diabetes.
As promised, here is a window on the remaining five families among the eleven total families we help support in the MPOMC Community Outreach program. As inspiration for our Holiday Family Match Program, we highlight the names/ages of the kids, as well as their desired gift items.
Stay tuned for a new feature in the next newsletter by one of the moms in our Community Outreach program who will be writing an article highlighting a day in the life of one of our Community Outreach families.
Family 1:
Maria is the mother to three children, James and Melissa (2 year old twins) and Jenny, who is a spirited 5 year old. All three of her kids could really use
clothing and shoes for the winter, while diapers for the twins still tops their list of holiday gift ideas. James is really into cars and books right now, while his twin sister, Melissa would love a doll and some books about princesses. Big sister Jenny also loves books since she is learning to read and would appreciate a doll appropriate for a 5-year old girl.
Family 2:
Rocio is the proud mom to three boys, Caleb and Jared (2-yr old twins) and Oscar, 9 years old. Top desired gift items for Rocio are warm winter clothing and shoes for her sons. Her twin sons love musical instruments and books (Spanish bilingual preferred), and their favorite colors are green and blue. Big brother, Oscar loves legos and books, and his favorite colors are black, blue and red.
Family 3:
Almita manages a busy household of four beautiful young kids — Gabriel & Angel (10 mos old twin boys), Vivienne (her 3.5 yr old daughter), and Osvin (her 8 yr old son). The most desired (and needed) items on their holiday list are diapers/wipes, clothing, and shoes. Other gift ideas include baby toys, farm animals, musical toys, blocks, and books (bilingual Spanish preferred) for her 10 mos old twin boys. Vivienne, her 3.5 year old daughter loves books, dolls, and dress up clothes. And Osvin, her 8 yr old son, loves cars, books, and legos.
Family 4:
Duvilia has three children: Franklyn and Edin (11 mos old twin boys) and a daughter, Adeli, who is 7 years old. For Duvilia, diapers/wipes, clothing/shoes, and books (bilingual Spanish preferred) are her top priority gift items. She would love to get her 11 mos old twins a tricycle with the push bar. Adeli’s favorite color is purple and she loves barbies, bratz dolls, and any other “long hair dolls”.
Family 5:
Ruth has three beautiful children – Melanie and Sofia, 3 yr old twin girls, and a son, Axel, who is 7 years old. Melanie’s favorite colors are pink and red. She loves barbies, princesses, dress-up clothing, and books. Sofia’s favorite colors are purple and blue. Sofia is a “little mom”, who likes to change, feed, and put her doll to sleep. She also likes to play tea party and pretend she is cooking. Seven-year old Axel’s favorite colors are orange and blue. He loves Harry Potter, legos, and books about Captain Underpants.
Thanks again for all of your support for the MPOMC Community Outreach Program. Please let us know if you would like to participate in the Holiday Family Match Program and/or make any donations to the eleven families we support. Diapers/wipes and clothing donations are especially appreciated any time of year.
